My family was driving to our favorite Italian restaurant one night when we happened to see an enormous snapping turtle by the side of the road. The boys begged their dad to pull over so we could take a closer look. The turtle sat there, still as could be, staring ahead. The boys could not understand how something that looked so harmless, could possibly take your finger off with just one snap.
Satan comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Whether it is through a person, a bad habit or an outright act of evil, Satan will try and and get to you any way he can. He comes in emotions too. Like doubt and shame and jealousy. He bathes us in these emotions. Causing us to do and say things that do nothing but feed his power.
Satan loves to get to us like the snapping turtle too. As a harmless looking animal who waits and then deceives you in one swift swoop. He might disguise himself as a nice person who is really a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He might be a seemingly harmless habit done too many times, eventually turning into something much more. He might be a recurring bad thought that keeps popping into your head until ,finally, it turns into an action.
Satan is waiting for any opening he can find. It’s one of the reasons the Bible tells us to put on the whole armor of God. To protect ourselves against the evil that is all around us. Fortunately, we do have access to weapons. Staying deep in His word, speaking with Him daily and surrounding yourself with a community of believers can be your protection.
Don’t let him slip in. Whether he’s bursting in the front door as an outright act of evil or in the back door like a snapping turtle, he will look for any unlocked door or window.
The holy spirit is your armor. His word is your sword. Your community is your shield.
Because he’s going to keep trying.
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
