It’s day 2 in NYC, and my coworker/travel buddy Jeannine and I have successfully figured out the public transportation system. We are pretty proud of our suburban, car driving selves. Buses and subways are confusing! I’m not sure I could have done it by myself for a week. Of course there was that awkward moment when I tried to get on a Metro bus without exact change or a Metro card. I know… I know.. it was pretty embarrassing. It could have been even worse, except the bus driver gave us a ride anyways. And who said New Yorkers aren’t nice?
The bus driver was my firefly moment of the day. He turned a potentially embarrassing moment into a bright spot. He didn’t have to let us on the bus and he could have been rude about it as well. Instead, he showed kindness and compassion to two confused tourists and took us to where we needed to go. We said thank you but he waved it off with just a nod. He didn’t do it for the thank yous.
Fireflies are fascinating insects. The way they emit light is a magical event. Truly they are one of God’s wonders. Did you know there are over 2000 different types but only some of them can shine? We, however, are God’s most magnificent creation and can always shine. With Him, our light can shine far brighter and last for far longer than anything else.
Dear Paige, try each and every day to be a light to others. Even if it’s just a little flicker like a smile to a stranger, or an extra five dollar tip, they can add up. A lot of little flickers can even light up an entire field, bringing others out of the darkness and into the light themselves.
Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
